Celebrating the Ugly Dog
While we know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and true beauty is about what’s on the inside, June 20 is Ugliest Dog Day. So we couldn’t help but celebrate dogs that are…well…so ugly, they’re cute.
Although a dog’s looks are defined by their genes, they’re all part of the same species that has been manipulated by man for hundreds of years. What on earth have we done?! The results are pretty out of this world.
But what exactly makes an ugly dog? The answer to that is hard to define. Perhaps its similar to the way we define beauty in humans? Symmetry and health contribute to our perception, so perhaps the lack of those things helps us define ugly? Perhaps, like humans, our imperfections are sometimes our most endearing traits.
Often, dogs that are part Chinese crested and hairless come up pretty quickly when thinking of the ugliest. But when it comes right down to it, maybe its just a gut feeling (pun intended). But they are all equally deserving of our love.
We’re not alone in appreciating the ugly dog of course. The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is an annual contest held in Petaluma, CA since the 1970’s. The 2016 winnner was a 17-year-old blind, Chinese crested chihuahua from Encino, CA.
The 2015 winner, Quasi Modo leaves us speechless. He’s like those flip books you played with as a child, mixing the head of one animal with the body of another. He also looks like he is a character in a video game or movie. He looks built for speed and is probably still a good cuddler.
Cats and Small Animals Too!
Because Run Those Dogs loves cats and small animals too, we would be remiss if we didn’t include an ugly cat or ten.
